THE LAST SNOW IN BRATTLEBORO

The winter of 2010-2011 was one of the worst winters in the history of Brattleboro, Vermont, with an astonishing total of 161.5 inches of snow. As April neared its end, there were still piles of snow on the ground throughout the town. Feeling that I couldn’t properly enjoy the budding spring weather until I was sure that the snow was truly gone, I began driving the town streets, photographing all the piles of snow I could find.

This 44” x 96” hand-drawn map was created using colored pencils, oil-based paint pens, whiteout, pencil, and inkjet photographs. It features a street map of Brattleboro and documents the location of each mound of snow at the end of April, 2011.

The last mound of snow that I found was on Frost Street. I planted a sign in it that read, “The Last Snow In Brattleboro,” and left it there to alert others that the end of our epic winter was finally at hand. I returned each day to monitor the snow pile until it disappeared.
